Arriving at the police station, Kevin was already inside with Carl. Entering the office, Ben said, “Ron, I’d like to begin with your statement. Kevin, take Carl in the other room.”

“Ok, Ben.”

“Ron, from the beginning- Tell me what happened tonight, and not so fast. I’m not that good with a typewriter.”

I began to relate my story with Veronica in the room, unfurling the event as they happened. The deeper I got into my interview, the more she was unsettled in her chair, shifting from one side to the other. When I got to the description of what I witnessed at the window, her face became black with anger. It grew blacker with every word of condemnation that was coming from my lips, describing the violence of the shadows on the drapes.

If looks could kill, I know in my mind, given the chance, she would have silenced my testimony. The face I thought was so foreign to the woman I had so quickly put on a pedestal was giving me the look of death. Being in the same room hearing my account of what happened was tearing at her inner soul. She realized, like a snared animal, there wasn’t much room for escape. There was no way she could lie her way out of what I was saying. She was trapped in her own little web of deception.

As I continued describing the events of the evening, Ben was typing as fast as he could. Noticing he was falling behind, I paused every now and then for him to catch up.

Glancing at her whenever I did pause, I noted she was sneering at me. Her eye contact was as though she was giving me a look. Yes, given the chance to silence me, I would have been dead- as dead as the girl who was strangled. Something I could have never imagined from a person I was so much in love with only a few short hours ago. In a few minutes, Kevin opened the door from the inner office.

“Ben, sorry to interrupt, but Carl wants to speak to you alone.”

Ben rose from his chair to exchange offices with Kevin then closed the door. I looked at Veronica who was now in a state of desperation because of what Carl might be saying. In about five minutes, Ben opened the door.

“Kevin, bring Mrs. Simmons in here to wait. I want to finish Ron’s interview, then get a statement from Carl. He decided to give me a full confession.”

Veronica, in the exchange of rooms, cursed at Carl as she passed. “You stupid bastard- I should have known better than to trust you.”

“Carl, take a seat. I’m going to turn on this tape recorder and record our conversation. Don’t pay any attention to her. You realize that anything you say here can and will be held against you in a court of law?”

“Yes, Ben, I understand.”

“The first thing I want to know is where did you take the victim tonight?”

“I took her to Jackson and Carson Streets.
